Maybe its me, but it seems like Monday Nights music experience entitled... VH1 Divas Celebrate Soul in New York City. Belonged on BET. It's starring...Mary J. Blige, Chaka Khan, Mavis Staples, along with Jill Scott, Idol alum, Dreamgirl Jennifer Hudson, and Kelly Clarkson...Kelly Clarkson? Well she is getting pretty curvy, a little spray tan, and she's good to go. Unfortunately, Kelly's going thru an identity crisis, first she had a cute little figure like Katy Perry, and started performing solid pop, Then she went blond and a little more curvy like Jessica Simpson and went with a country sound. Now she's styling darker hair, is busting out of her clothes, like Cristina Aguilera and is going for music with a message. Hence performing with the women of colour on Divas.
The vocals by the combined duets and trios, were all extremely loud... I got a lot of my neighbor banging on my wall to turn it down and it was all similar sounding. To the point were it got a little monotonous basically because all the women on stage were trying to out shout each other. That part was really a mess and it really belonged on BET, it was not the quality of Diva show I remember from the 90's. Mariah Carey with Celine Dion singing with Shania Twain. Or Cher and Tina Turner. Not that they whispered, but they did harmonize and combine sound bettter.
Things did improve when, Florence + the Machine's Florence Welch took the spotlight with her rendition of "Back to Black."
Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings performed late Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good," along with another great songstress, Wanda Jackson. sweetened with musical tribute paying homage to the star with a memorial performance.
Speaking of which on my Spreaker podcast we discussed, Winehouses's tragic life story, Would really make for a great movie...If she were played by Lady Gaga taking on the role of the late singer!
Anyway see VH1 Divas this week for the high's and lows.

I don't see how you can qualify this belonging on BET. Yes, it was about soul music but like the performers said soul is universal. And also in reference to the loud singing, that's across all genres- not just soul music. I think you're oversimplifying the show just because it wasn't as diverse as previous Divas incarnations in terms of genres celebrated. I liked all of the tributes as well as the roster, all of these singers have unique and powerful voices.
And about Kelly Clarkson, I appreciate that she isn't skinny and rail-thin but healthy and appreciative of who she is. It doesn't matter to me because she can sing which is above and beyond anything should be asking from her.
While I find your hub interesting, I think you're too quick to judge just because of who was on the program and that they didn't sing different genres.
